Eye diseases

Eye diseases include conditions that affect vision, eye comfort, and eye health. Common problems include eye inflammation, night blindness, cataract, blurred vision, weak eyesight, eye allergy, and stye. Symptoms may include redness, watering, pain, irritation, and reduced vision.

Eye Diseases

There are different types of eye diseases:

1) Phlegmatic Conjunctivitis (Eye Inflammation)

Eye inflammation is actually a disease of the conjunctiva, which is a membranous layer attached inside the eyelids and covering the cornea. This delicate membrane serves as a substitute for skin. Inside the eyelids, it contains blood vessels and tiny glands. When these glands swell, the condition is called granular conjunctivitis. This membrane is connected internally with the choroid and retina. When inflammation occurs in this membrane, it is called eye inflammation. In phlegmatic eye inflammation, excessive coldness and moisture affect the nerves of the conjunctiva. There is mild inflammation in the eye, but excessive discharge and mucus are produced. In severe cases, swelling also occurs.

Causes:

  • Excessive use of cold and moist foods or substances

  • working in cold and damp weather conditions

2) Asha (Night Blindness)

In this condition, the patient cannot see at night, especially in darkness. Sometimes vision begins to disappear from evening onward. This occurs because excessive moisture affects nervous stimulation, especially the nerves of the brain, which in turn affects the retina. As a result, moisture increases in the vitreous humor, preventing light stimulation in darkness. Light cannot properly enter the eye, and the patient may become unable to move forward because nothing is visible. Darkness itself also increases nervous stimulation in the body.

Causes:

  • Excessive use of cold and moist foods or substances

3) Day Blindness

In this condition, vision becomes weak during the daytime because the eyes become dazzled by light. It is the opposite of night blindness. The ability to tolerate light decreases, and seeing becomes painful. In some cases, there is also a reduction in the dark pigment of the retina that helps tolerate light.

Causes:

Excessive use of hot and dry foods or substances

4) Dimness / Blurred Vision

In this condition, a cloudy layer appears over the eyes, as though a haze covers the clarity of vision, resulting in visual darkness. Sometimes discharge also occurs. This is actually due to excessive moisture accumulating in the eyes. It is considered one of the symptoms of catarrh (cold-related discharge).

Causes:

  • Cold and damp weather

  • excessive use of cold and moist foods or substances

5) Inward Eyelashes (Trichiasis)

Extra eyelashes grow on the eyelids, or the eyelashes turn inward. This occurs due to an excess of hair-producing material in the body and inward stimulation in the eyelids, leading to abnormal eyelash growth.

Causes:

Excessive use of cold and dry foods or substances

6) Cataract (Nazool-ul-Maa)

Cataract is an abnormal fluid that gradually, or sometimes suddenly, settles in the pupil like a descending discharge. When this fluid becomes thick and covers the entire opening, vision slowly disappears. Water keeps flowing from the eyes, floating spots appear before the eyes, and objects may appear doubled. If some area remains uncovered, partial vision remains. If the fluid is thin, the patient may still perceive sunlight or lamp light. There are three types: white, black, and green.

Causes:

  • Old age

diabetes

  • eye injuries

  • kidney diseases, etc.

7) Weak Eyesight

Due to weak vision, the eyes become tired after reading, writing, or doing visual work for a short time. Small letters become difficult to read, darkness appears before the eyes, and watering may occur. There may also be mild headache, and distant objects appear unclear.

Causes:

  • Mental strain

  • excessive visual work such as studying

  • sewing

  • embroidery

  • working with fine machine parts

  • excessive use of computers and video games

  • sexual excesses

  • indigestion

  • gas and vapors

  • chronic cold

  • drug abuse

8) Ophthalmia / Allergic Eye Inflammation

This disease commonly occurs in summer and mostly affects people exposed to intense sunlight. The natural temperament of the eyes is considered warm, and additional heat causes irritation, pricking pain, and burning. The eyes become extremely red, and in severe cases the face may also become red. Itching and watering occur. This disease is also called eye allergy.

Causes:

  • Working in smoke or dust

  • excessive use of hot foods or substances

  • working under intense sunlight and heat

  • epidemic influences

9) Stye (Sha’eerah)

A boil-like hard swelling develops on the edge of the eyelid in an elongated shape. It causes pain and discomfort. It may heal after maturing but often recurs and takes time to ripen.

Causes:

  • Excessive use of cold and dry foods or substances

  • cold dry weather conditions

10) Subal

The fine blood vessels of the eyes swell and form a reddish layer, with continuous tearing. Sometimes the eyes do not become red, but watering continues persistently.

Causes:

  • Excessive use of cold and dry foods or substances

  • environmental or climatic conditions
