Paralysis (Falij)

Paralysis (Falij) is traditionally described as a condition in which one side or part of the body loses movement and sensation while the rest remains unaffected. It may involve the lower limbs or one side of the body, causing weakness, difficulty walking, impaired mobility, and various associated symptoms depending on

Paralysis (Falij)

The word Falij literally means “to divide into two equal parts.” Since in this disease, one half of the body becomes affected (paralyzed) while the other half remains healthy, it is called Falij. It has three main types:

Lower Paralysis (Falij Asfal)

Due to excessive warm and moist fluids in the body, there is stimulation in the nerves, degeneration in glands, and relaxation in muscles, causing the lower part of the body to become numb and immobile. Because moist heat causes sedation and numbness in the psychic/spiritual energy, and a moist temperament leads to dullness and loss of senses, this results in loss of sensation and movement. In this condition, both legs become so immobile that the patient cannot move them even with difficulty. They can only be moved if someone else lifts or supports them. The patient cannot bear weight on them, and even walking for urination or bowel movements becomes impossible. Sometimes there is difficulty in urination, and constipation occurs, requiring enema. The patient feels a sinking sensation in the heart, and stool and urine may appear whitish.

Causes

Excessive use of hot-moist or cold-moist foods, bathing in cold water, etc. The cause is believed to be obstruction of “spirit (rooh)” flow, meaning blockage in the pathways through which vital energy reaches the organs. This blockage may occur due to cuts, constriction of pores, thick humors, or pressure on spinal vertebrae. Sometimes thick humors settle in nerve branches, blocking the flow of energy and resulting in numbness and paralysis.

Right-Sided Paralysis

Extreme stimulation of muscles, relaxation of glands, and degeneration of nerves cause phlegmatic fluids to settle in one part of the spinal origin. This leads to paralysis of the right side of the body except the face. The affected side becomes moist due to accumulation of fluid waste, and sensation and movement are lost suddenly. The patient’s urine is white, raw, and turbid, with thick consistency. The liver becomes weak, leading to poor digestion of urine. Blood deficiency occurs, the face becomes pale or dark, and there may be palpitations and either high or low blood pressure. The tongue may have a thick white coating or black spots. There is excessive gas in the abdomen, constipation, and hemorrhoids. Increased uric acid, cholesterol, and triglycerides are often observed.

Causes

Excessive meat consumption, foods like biryani, burgers, kebabs

dry and hot foods

alcohol consumption.

Left-Sided Paralysis

Due to stimulation in glands, degeneration in muscles, and relaxation in nerves, phlegmatic material accumulates in one part of the brain ventricles, leading to paralysis of the left side of the face and body. This is also called paralysis with facial palsy (Falij with Laqwa). The left arm and leg cannot move and must be moved with the help of the other hand. The mouth tastes bitter, blood pressure is high, and urine is dropwise and colored. Stool is yellowish and sometimes accompanied by diarrhea. There is burning sensation in the body, heat, tingling, anxiety, and heart palpitations. Hands and feet may burn and sometimes swell severely. This type often occurs in hot-tempered individuals.

Causes

Severe high blood pressure, kidney inflammation, intense anger, and excessive use of hot and dry foods.

  • Excess use of hot-moist or cold-moist foods

  • Frequent bathing in cold water

  • Obstruction or blockage of vital energy (“rooh”) flow

  • Blockage in nerve or bodily pathways (due to cuts and compressions or narrowing of passages)

  • Accumulation of thick bodily fluids or humors in nerve branches

  • Pressure on spinal vertebrae affecting nerve function

  • Excessive meat-heavy diet (e.g.biryani/burgers/kebabs)

  • Regular consumption of dry and overly hot foods

  • Alcohol consumption

  • Persistent high blood pressure

  • Kidney inflammation or weakness

  • Severe or uncontrolled anger

  • General imbalance of bodily heat and dryness
