Overview

Stupor (Loss of Sensation / Catatonic State) This is a condition in which the patient loses sensation and awareness, causing their movements to stop and their senses to become impaired. The person appears stunned or bewildered and remains fixed in whatever position they are in — if standing, they remain standing; if lying down, they remain lying down. Some physicians have described it as a melancholic (black bile–related) disorder, but this is completely incorrect, because melancholia is associated with dryness, whereas this condition cannot arise from dryness.

Symptoms

  • Due to phlegmatic moisture affecting the nervous stimulation the patient becomes motionless and remains in the same position. If the patient is sitting they continue sitting in that exact posture.
  • If the patient’s eyes are open they remain open; if they are closed they remain closed.
  • The patient is unable to speak/ eat/ or drink
  • The patient stays lying in the same condition and cannot turn or change sides on their own.

Causes

  • Excessive use of cold and moist substances/things.
