Overview

Excessive Sleep / Sleep: When natural sleep exceeds 6 to 8 hours, it is referred to as Subāt. In this condition, sleep becomes so deep that the patient does not easily wake up even when being roused. If an alarm is set nearby, it may keep ringing for up to half an hour, yet the person remains unaware. Even after completing a full night’s sleep, the patient still feels like sleeping throughout the day. The state of sleep is extremely intense, and waking the patient is difficult. This condition often occurs after severe cold exposure to the head. Sometimes, the cause of Subāt is the accumulation of raw fluids in the anterior part of the brain. The temperament of the brain is cold and moist, and cold organs have weak digestive power; their waste products are not properly dissolved, so raw fluids accumulate in them. These fluids make the vital spirit sluggish, dull, and thick. As a result, the patient feels heaviness in the front part of the head because the material accumulates there. This also causes heaviness in eye movements, since the nerves of the eyes are connected to the anterior brain; thus, looseness develops in them and their movements become slow. The patient often has a discharge of thick fluid from the nostrils.

Causes

  • Cold and moist weather
  • consumption of cold and moist substances which extinguish innate heat and make it impure
  • causing the psychic spirit to be unable to properly utilize its nourishment
  • changes in sleep and wake cycles
  • thyroid disorder
  • seasonal changes
  • simple imbalance of temperament
